A boat, a board, a tow line, a life jacket and a body of water are what the wakeboarder needs to get started. These pieces of equipment can vary in expense and detail and can be overwhelming for the beginner. This article will help the beginner get started and define what equipment and brand names to look out for to get ready to ride the perfect wake.
First, the rider needs an inboard motor boat to produce a wake. These boats can range in power and speed. A wakeboarding boat has a tower mounted on the back of the boat, usually 2 meters high above the water line, where the attached rope extends out to a handle which the rider uses to hold onto. The boat can be weighted with ballasts or “fat sacks” which are bags filled with water or sand to give the boat additional weight in the front and back which produce larger wakes. Calabria, Centurion, Correct Craft, Epic, Gekko, Malibu, MasterCraft, MB, Moomba, Sanger, Session, Supra, Svfara, Tige are all leading brand names of wakeboarding boats. Typically, a beginner will want the boat to travel at a leisurely 19 mph, increasing to 24 mph as the rider’s comfort level and skill progresses. This speed is fast enough for the rider to experience cutting over the wake and slow enough that the rider doesn’t experience too much drag.
The wakeboard the rider buys will determine what style and kind of rider he or she wants to be. There are various features on a wakeboard which correspond to actions the rider can maneuver while riding. Beginner riders will want to buy a board with squared edges, this makes for a better startup and adds steadiness when the rider feels a lack of control. If the rider is more advanced and prefers to perform air tricks, a board with rounded edges will be optimal for landing in the water and gaining speed. Wakeboards are made in either single tip or twin tipped. Single tipped wakeboards are used when the rider wants to ride in one direction. Twin tipped boards offer the rider freedom to ride in normal stance and switchstance. Most boards today are sold as twin-tipped as the rider will ideally want to be able to ride and perform tricks while riding in both directions. A wakeboard’s length average length is 120-150 cm. with a width of an average of 38-44cm. A beginner will want to work with a longer board for stability with starts and turns. A board has an angle or curves at its ends, referred to as rocker. A high rocker has a more rounded bottom which aids the rider in landing easier with jumps. A low rocker has a flat bottom and is optimal for acceleration and control.
Under the wakeboard is a set of fins, which is used for the rider’s tracking and turning in the water. The boards also come equipped with boots and bindings which can be adjusted to the rider’s comfort and foot size.
The rider will want to use a rope that doesn’t stretch and is made of fabric such as Kevlar. The rope to tow the rider should be 60-70 feet long and the beginner will want to ride on the shorter end of this spectrum, towing the rider a bit closer to the boat where the wake is narrower and easier to ride.
Last but not least, the rider should always wear a life jacket!

But for beginners who want to experience the exhilaration that wake boarding provides, having the right wakeboard gear is essential.
You should start in exploring the wakeboarding experience by first knowing about the right wakeboard gear like the rope, the boat, and the wakeboard itself. You probably already know that boats are essential in wake boarding and most boats can be used for this sport. However, it is also important that some boats be modified for this purpose because some boats are made for water skiing purposes which have a totally different goal compared to wake boarding. This is because while water skiers want minimal wakes, wake boarders look for maximum wakes. Having a good tournament inboard will make particularly good boat for wake boarding. Also, using water skiing boats can be especially useful since they have the power and acceleration needed to make wakes.
Most experienced wake boarders make use of two sacs that they put on the either side of the engines. These sacks are giant bags that add weight to your boat. Using extended pylons will also help because it will provide air that will give you the extra float which adds to your wakeboarding experience. This is due to the upward pressure that the poles exert with minimal exertion of your part.
Another essential wakeboard gear you should take note of is the wakeboard ropes. You should look for ropes with zero or minimal stretch those weights as little as possible. Standard ropes for wake boarding are usually sixty feet in length but this can be further customized to have longer lengths. Ski ropes also make good wakeboarding ropes but standard ski ropes are fifteen feet shorter compared to wake boarding ropes.
Boots are also important in wakeboarding, you can use surf straps since they are adjustable but this is not recommended nowadays because of all the models available in the market today. Of course, the most essential wakeboard gear you need to have is the wake board itself. Beginners should chose a board whose edge are squared since this gives more stability and balance but more experienced riders usually use boards with round edges since this gives them the chance to land more air tricks. In addition, rounder edges enables to board to have more speed.

Wakeboard boats are specialized boats used for the specific purpose of creating wakes. On the wakes, athletes perform their water and aerial tricks.
How wakes are created using wakeboard boats
Like ski boats, wakeboard boats have ballasts, yet their ballasts usually have much more weight, making larger wakes when wakeboard boats are moving. Another device, the wedge, helps shape the wake that the ballast creates.
Wakeboard boats in the market
Wakeboard boats sold in the market, whether used or new, have the same basic features. They come with upholstered chairs or benches, carpeted surface, wakeboard towers, ballast, wedge, and, of course, the steering wheel. Yet these wakeboard boats vary in their fuel capacity, type of engines, and accessories. Some wakeboard boats have a special button which lets you adjust the shape of the wake with just one press. A few have heavier ballasts which create even bigger wakes. Others have exhaust systems which reduce the carbon monoxide emitted by the machine.
A number of wakeboard boats have specially engineered seats which give you lumbar support. Others have swim platforms which are either made of teak or fiberglass. There are even those which employ the use of mufflers to silence the engine.
Accessories in wakeboard boats
Most of the differences from one wakeboard boat to another lies in the accessories included in the package. While most have a whole stereo system, some even come with tower cans to protect your speakers from environmental elements. Some even have amplifiers and satellite antennae. Compartments and lockers onboard have different sizes; and some used wakeboard boats sold by individual sellers even include sports gear like ski handles, tubes, wakeskates, tube towing ropes, lifejackets, and both men’s and women’s bindings.
Other wakeboard boats come not only with boat covers, but also with cockpit covers. While most wakeboard boats have heaters and a bar, others even have hot water showers. Some even have clamp down board racks, pop-up bow and stern cleats, and batteries with battery switch. A few even come with a lounge remote control and halogen docking lights. Most individual sellers sell their wakeboard boats with a free trailer.
Services involved in purchasing wakeboard boats
Although a big number of wakeboard boats sold online are from companies, there is a considerable number sold by other wakeboard users. These wakeboard boats are sold through an online auction, where you can bid for the boat of your choice. The payment methods are several and some wakeboard boats users even offer various wakeboard accessories. Some sellers provide free shipment while most individual sellers admit that you have to shoulder necessary shipment fees and taxes upon order.
With the given features, engines and payment details above, you have boundless selections to choose from. It is all up to you whether to purchase a brand new or a second-hand wakeboard boat. All that matters is you make sure that among hundreds of wakeboard boats in the market, you choose that which fits you and your style in wakeboarding.

Wakeboarding is a sport of the times. A wakeboarder is a person towed behind a boat or a cable skiing lift at a speed of around 18-24 mph. The main difference is that instead of skis, the rider uses a single board, shorter in length and wider than snowboards, with foot bindings.
For decades, surfing was the favorite sport of the beach lover. Even in doing this sport, one would require transportation by boat from one location to another. In 1985, a San Diego Surfer named Tony Finn developed a hybrid of the water ski and the surfboard. He called this the Skurfboard. This new board looked almost exactly like a surfboard but was pulled by a boat while its rider performed new skills and tricks. The sport was consequently called Skurfing. Later that summer, foot straps were added to these boards and this was a big thing. This allowed riders to do more free-flowing and dynamic stunts. However, the sport continued to struggle due to a lack of innovation and technology surrounding the boards.
Herb O’Brien, a successful businessman in waterskiing and the owner of H.O. Sports, changed the face of the sport by refining the boards, making it possible for riders to perform even more stunts. Other companies soon followed suit. The sport gained large and wide audiences in 1992, when World Sports & Marketing, a Florida-based sports and events promoter, began setting up wakeboard events. This gave wakeboarders a chance to compete on a professional level at the same time getting exposure on international sports stations ESPN and ESPN2. The sport got more validation when World Publications launched its own publication, Wake Board Magazine, in 1993. With each passing year, support for the Pro Wakeboard Tour and the magazine continue to grow. To add to this, various cups have been formed and launched and are eagerly anticipated and widely attended.
For the average beach dweller, the pull of the sport is obvious. Unlike surfing, it is fairly easy to pick-up. You have something to hold on to when wakeboarding and, for a lot of people, this support is a real perk. The obvious other advantages are there. With Wakeboarding, you are free to do the sport at any time. While surfers need to follow the waves, wakeboarders can be active on any beach. The only thing necessary is a boat to pull you along. There is a lot of room for self-expression as well. Much like water-skiers, wakeboarders have the freedom to reach for greater and greater heights when doing stunts. Some interesting trivia about wakeboarding include the following. At present, there are over 3.1 million wakeboarders worldwide. A video game about wakeboarding called Wakeboarfing Unleashed was released in 2003. The average income for wakeboarders is $95, 400 USD. Wakeboarding is now part of the X-Games and Gravity Games attracting even more attention and credibility as an extreme water sport. 75% of wakeboarders are male and aged 13-24, but a growing number of female wakeboarders are beginning to make a dent on the male-dominated sport. In addition, wakeboarding is currently the fastest growing water sport.
